This session will promote the development of coaching skills for both new and experienced instructional coaches.

The SIOP® Model for Administrators: Setting the Stage for Success!

Presented by Dr. MaryEllen Vogt

If you are new to SIOP, the session will provide an introduction and overview of this complex, empirically validated model of instruction for English learners and other students. If you're experienced with SIOP, the day's activities will deepen your understanding of SIOP's components and features, and clarify issues of the administrator's role in SIOP implementation, data collection, and professional development. After viewing a videotaped lesson, you will participate in discussing issues of reliability using the SIOP protocol. There will also be time to share SIOP ideas, successes, and challenges.

Developing Academic Language

Presented by Dr. Jana Echevarria and Dr. Deborah Short

As educators, we have worked with many students whose academic English is “good enough” to get by in their content classes, but not at a fully proficient level. Our goal for these English learners however is full proficiency, so how can we help them reach it?

This pre-conference workshop focuses on ways to advance English learners' proficiency in academic English so they can acquire information related to academic topics, communicate and produce information in academic contexts, and create and extend knowledge through linguistic, conceptual, and sociocultural choices.
