Donovan’s Word Jar, Grades 2-3
Donavan’s Word Jar is the story of a young African-American boy, Donavan, on a search to solve his dilemma – he has too many words to fit in his word jar collection! We chose this novel for its powerful attention to some rich social and emotional themes: perseverance, family, empathy, education, and kindness. Students will find themselves relating to and being inspired by Donavan’s search for a solution; this resource helps students build connections between Donavan’s life story and their own lives.

 

Ghost, Grades 6-8
This novel tells the story of Castle, a compassionate, flawed seventh-grader, who finds comfort and joy when he joins the track team. We chose this book for its careful exploration of some powerful social and emotional themes: poverty, bullying, sports, friendship, and overcoming trauma. This resource inspires students to build connections between Castle’s redemptive life story and their own.

 

The House on Mango Street, Grades 8-10

The House on Mango Street is the story of Esperanza, a pre-teen Chicana growing up in the barrio in Chicago. In the book, Esperanza narrates the stories of herself and her neighborhood and experiences joy, loss, change, and growth. We chose this novel for its powerful attention to some rich social and emotional themes: friendship and family, coming-of-age, poverty, community, loss, and perseverance. Students will find themselves relating to and being inspired by Esperanza; this resource helps students build connections between Esperanza’s experiences and their own.
