This one-day workshop provides teachers with support for improving students’ English language proficiency while they achieve content-area objectives and master essential skills. Participants will develop strategies that assist students in meeting grade level expectations and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Participants review lessons focused on vocabulary, grammar, spelling, listening and speaking, as well as lessons on reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills. Suggestions for scaffolding instruction to accommodate English language learners (ELLs) at all levels, including newcomers, will be addressed.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: • Identify the language acquisition principles.
• Facilitate lessons that improve English language proficiency and meet the CCSS.
• Teach content-area lessons using strategies that meet ELL needs.
• Scaffold instruction to accommodate all levels of ELLs.
