Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction: Activities and Routines, K – 12 with Donald Bear ›
Explore word study activities and schedules. We’ll sort together across the developmental continuum to see how phonics, spelling, and vocabulary are integrated in instruction. Concept sorts and other practices to teach vocabulary are introduced. Classroom routines for teacher-guided small group, and independent learning are introduced. Spelling routines are considered as part of word study to teach both phonics and vocabulary, a reconceptualization of how and why we teach spelling. Instructional practices with English learners are presented throughout.

The Critical Role of Word Meaning in Word Study with Shane Templeton ›
There is a reciprocal relationship between sound and meaning in word study. As learners explore letter and sound patterns in phonics and spelling instruction, the role of meaning in supporting that instruction is critical across all developmental levels. Teachers will learn how to guide this exploration as they address polysemy (multiple meanings), homophones and homographs, and Latin and Greek word elements. Learners will reflect on the meaning of known words to support their explorations of new sound and spelling patterns, and their learning of spelling patterns in turn supports their learning of unknown words through generative vocabulary learning.

Word Study with Emergent Bilinguals with Lori Helman ›
Many students speak one language at home and learn a new one at school, either as they participate in dual immersion programs or receive English learner support. These students are becoming bilingual and word study instruction can build on their capabilities in two languages. This session guides educators to tailor word study for students learning in a new language through techniques such as making connections across languages, identifying cross-linguistic challenges, and supporting students to use all of their linguistic resources.

Transitional and Intermediate Learners: Exploring Single-Syllable to Multisyllable Patterns in Words with Shane Templeton ›
There is more regularity to the spelling of sound in English than most students (and educators!) realize. Discovering this regularity benefits not only students' spelling but their reading as well. Beginning in the latter part of 1st grade for some children and in 2nd through 4th grade for most, this regularity may be discovered and learned through the exploration of within- and between-syllable patterns. Learners become aware of

Integrated Word Study: Spelling, Grammar, and Meaning in the Language Arts Classroom with Marcia Invernizzi ›
There are three reasons for adopting a word study approach to spelling, vocabulary, and grammar instruction in a language arts program: (1) Word study provides the link to integrate and apply word-level skills within the context of reading and writing; (2) word study builds on the fundamental cognitive learning process of focusing on comparing and contrasting and brings this process to conscious attention; and (3) word study is hands-on, student-centered, developmentally appropriate, and fun. Word-conscious teachers link word study to reading and writing, provide a flexible sequence of instruction that includes instruction in grammar, text analysis, and writing; and provide hands-on, repeated practice with words and ideas. Word study makes explicit how spelling patterns and word structures reflect meaning and use.
