There is a reciprocal relationship between sound and meaning in word study. As learners explore letter and sound patterns in phonics and spelling instruction, the role of meaning in supporting that instruction is critical across all developmental levels. Teachers will learn how to guide this exploration as they address polysemy (multiple meanings), homophones and homographs, and Latin and Greek word elements. Learners will reflect on the meaning of known words to support their explorations of new sound and spelling patterns, and their learning of spelling patterns in turn supports their learning of unknown words through generative vocabulary learning.
