9/27/2018 Developing Conceptual Understanding: What, When, and How
There are two ingredients for developing conceptual understanding: computational proficiency and problem-solving skills. But what is meant by this? In this webinar, we examine five instructional strategies that can help students develop conceptual understanding: Building Skills and Procedures from Concepts, Using Problem-Based Teaching, Using Multiple Representations, Focusing on Reasoning and Communication, and Helping Students Make Connections between Concepts. Within each strategy, we'll explore examples of concepts, illustrate how concepts develop over time through number concepts like place value, and we will uncover the important outcomes for teaching understanding.
