Change of Practice Institute: Literacy Institute†
How can teachers help their students become college-and-career ready readers and writers? The Literacy Institute provides an integrated overview for English language arts (ELA) teachers. Explore new 21st century survival skills and backwards curriculum design. Learn ways to support new instructional shifts, analyze student thinking, and instill classroom routines that promote literacy proficiency. Make content more accessible by applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), while still setting rigorous expectations for students. Examine measures of cognitive and task complexity (Webb’s Depth of Knowledge and Bloom’s Taxonomy) and develop tasks of increased rigor for ELA classrooms. Engage with and analyze sample performance tasks that align with CCSS. Design instructional units where students demonstrate mastery of the standards and develop smart academic behaviors.
The Literacy Institute is excellent professional learning for teachers transitioning to a new literacy program or a new instructional model.
