I. Instructional Design

onRamp to Algebra utilizes a classroom Workshop Model designed to:

  • Ensure students are constantly active and engaged
  • Provide students a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts
  • Develop strong problem solving skills

Because at-risk students are often disengaged from mathematics, onRamp to Algebra integrates a 45-minute Workshop model to ensure students are engaged and understanding.

  • The lesson Opening begins with a "bell-ringer" 15 second front-of-class animation, followed by 10-minutes of direct instruction involving student participation
  • The students then break into Work Time (25 minutes) where they work both independently and collaboratively, discussing problems and concepts with partners or in small groups
  • A Closing (10 minutes) encourages students, at the direction of the teacher, to share solutions and strategies with the entire class

II. Flexible Implementation Model

OnRamp to Algebra is a blend of print and digital components, but is designed for flexible implementation to accommodate all classrooms. The program can be fully implemented using:

  • Only the print materials found in the Student and Teacher Editions
  • Purely digital, using the eText versions of the Student and Teacher Editions
  • Or, a blend of the above, with the student benefiting from the online homework Learning Aids for scaffolded support, and the teacher projecting the digital presentation screens to facilitate class discussion

onRamp to Algebra can be used immediately by all classrooms, but the implementation options allow the program to grow with the technology plans of each school.

The program is optimized to be used in parallel with the school’s core middle grades math curriculum. However, the program can also be modified for use during Summer School (by eliminating 2 or the 6 units), or as a replacement core math curriculum.

III. Scope & Sequence

onRamp to Algebra consists of 6 Units, made up of 112 lessons. Units include:

  • Foundations of Algebra
  • Operations with Fractions
  • Positive and Negative Numbers
  • Ratio and Proportionality
  • Showing Relationships with Graphs
  • Expressions, Equations, & Exponents
