The SIOP® Model Professional Development

These fifteen-minute online surveys measure educators’
perceptions of instructional practices, content knowledge,
pedagogical content knowledge, and effectiveness of the
professional development (PD). Findings from the surveys can
be used to gauge the effectiveness of SIOP® PD and to guide followup
PD.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

NUMBER OF PARtICIPANTS:
120 survey participants

Pearson Consultants conduct fifteen-minute classroom
observations in a school or across multiple schools. Data collected
is analyzed and a report is provided on the implementation fidelity
of SIOP®.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
K–12 Classrooms

NUMBER OF PARtICIPANTS:
Maximum of 6 classrooms observed per day

These virtual or face-to-face interviews and focus groups gather
participant perceptions of the impact of SIOP®. They consist of one
thirty-minute principal interview, one forty-five-minute teacher
focus group, and one twenty-minute student focus group.

NUMBER OF DAYS: 1

Pearson sets up a data-collection portal for school and/or district
observers to enter SIOP® classroom observations. Pearson
analyzes SIOP® classroom observation data to determine the level
of SIOP® implementation.

The school and/or district provides student outcome data such as
achievement, attendance, discipline, and so forth. Pearson analyzes
student outcome data in conjunction with school- and/or districtcollected
SIOP® classroom observation data to determine the degree
to which high implementers of SIOP® impact student outcomes.

Participants learn how to use the SIOP® protocol to gauge the level of implementation with the SIOP® Model. The goal of the two-day training is for participants to calibrate their SIOP® protocol ratings with a SIOP® expert as a means of establishing acceptable levels of inter-rater reliability. Once inter-rater reliability is established, participants can know with confidence that classroom observations collected with the SIOP® protocol are valid and reliable.

OUTCOMES:

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Become familiar with the SIOP® protocol observation process.

• Apply understanding of the SIOP® protocol to observe and rate six classrooms.

Collaborate with a Pearson research expert to design a research
study that measures the impact of SIOP® professional development.
The research expert works with the school and/or district to
determine research questions, provide support in generating stratified
random samples of classrooms to observe, and guide analysis.
