Prentice Hall Connected Mathematics 2 (CMP2)

This one-day workshop focuses on the Launch, Explore, Summarize instructional model used in the CMP2 curriculum. Participants experience model lessons using one unit from the sixth-grade CMP2 curriculum and strategize ways to engage students in all three parts of the instructional model. This workshop allows participants to focus on the mathematical content and experience various strategies for problem solving within the unit. Participants solve problems, discuss mathematical concepts, and work together to reflect on effective strategies for implementing CMP2 into their classrooms. At the end of this workshop, participants will be prepared to successfully implement the unit in their classrooms.

OUTCOMES:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

• Identify the organization and concepts found in one unit from the CMP2 curriculum and supporting resources.

• Experience CMP2 instructional design.

• Reach a level of comfort with one unit from the curriculum.

This workshop highlights techniques within the curriculum that ensure student engagement and allow teachers to check for student understanding through student discourse. Participants are involved in lessons that model how to execute effective questioning strategies that enhance mathematical discourse in the classroom.

Participants walk away with a deeper understanding of how to implement these strategies into their classrooms.

This one-day workshop allows participants to experience and reflect upon the assessment components within the CMP2 curriculum. This workshop allows participants to dig deeper in the curriculum by taking a closer look at how mathematical concepts are developed and how students are being assessed formally and informally throughout a unit. Participants work with the various types of assessments involved in the CMP2 curriculum, including partner quizzes, unit tests, projects, and students’ daily work. They also examine student work and respond to work samples as they relate to students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. Participants walk away with strategies that allow them to use their students’ assessment data to make strategic decisions in their classrooms.

Participants engage in the mathematics of the CMP2 curriculum and read, reflect, and dialogue ways to enhance effective instruction. Participants discuss best practices in a CMP2 classroom and strategize ways in which leaders can support their teachers. They also strategize ways to promote teacher growth, which is necessary to support a learning environment where all students are able to build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

This one-day, hands-on workshop allows teachers to become familiar with TeacherSTATION™ software, TeacherEXPRESS™, and ExamView®. Participants set up their online lesson planner and create lesson plans according to their state standards and district calendars. This workshop also familiarizes participants with the many features of the test generator that allows for customization and differentiating instruction. They have the opportunity to work on creating customized tests and collaborate with others to reflect upon the effectiveness of using the test generator as a tool within the CMP2 curriculum.

OUTCOMES:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

• Use the TeacherSTATION software to explore CMP2 resources in a digital environment.

• Describe how to use CMP2 lesson planning and test generating software.

• Focus on methods of using technology to enhance and differentiate instruction in a CMP2 classroom.

• Identify and explore online resources to support student learning in a CMP2 classroom.

This three-day workshop includes questioning strategies, interactive strategies, and using student assessment to drive instruction. Teachers participate in activities that allow them to build upon their knowledge of the CMP2 curriculum and experience strategies that increase the effectiveness of the curriculum.  Participants experience ways to enhance student learning through effective questioning strategies embedded in the curriculum. This workshop also allows teachers to see how students are being assessed both formally and informally, and it offers a chance to examine student work and strategize ways to enhance student understanding of mathematical concepts. Participants experience model lessons from the CMP2 curriculum, and they focus and reflect on strategies to ensure student engagement in daily lessons.

This two-day, job-embedded coaching cycle models effective implementation of CMP2. This offering may be used to support new teachers, expand instructional knowledge for experienced teachers, or provide a professional development opportunity for staff members. An experienced educational consultant supports two teachers during the two-day cycle.  Research has proven that coaching and modeling improves results in instructional practices.

OUTCOMES:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

• Analyze data from multiple sources, including CMP2 assessments, to identify student needs and set instructional goals.

• Anticipate student misconceptions and develop a plan to address the misconceptions.

• Use a gradual-release model that includes consultant demonstration, structured and guided practice through co-teaching, independent practice, and reflective feedback as a vehicle for analysis of CMP2 lessons and instructional improvement.

• Have a deeper understanding of the instructional philosophy, mathematical content, lesson structure, and assessment features of the CMP2 curriculum.

• Develop a deeper understanding of the ways to implement best practices and mathematical conceptual learning.
