Enhancing Instruction for ELs With The SIOP® Model

The SIOP Model (Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2004) was developed to provide EL specialists, coordinators, and teachers with a well-articulated, practical model of sheltered instruction. SIOP is used as a model for lesson planning and implementation of high-quality sheltered instruction for all educators across content areas. SIOP goes beyond instruction for ELs and has been shown to be effective in addressing the needs of all students.

Administrators and teachers are bombarded with new approaches to instruction, reform efforts, and practices that can compete with each other. What is often lacking in schools is a coherent plan for pulling together sound practices (Goldenberg, 2004). The SIOP Model is a framework that can bring together a school's instructional program by organizing methods for ensuring that effective practices can be implemented and quantified.
