The DBQ Project and Common Core: A System-Wide Approach to Historical Thinking and Evidence-Based, Argument Writing

Chip Brady, co-founder of The DBQ Project, will examine how to teach Document-Based Questions (DBQs) in a way that is accessible to all skill levels, grades 4-12. Highlighting our US, World, and Civics programs, participants will be exposed to the various stages that must be attended to if they are serious about reaching all students and grade levels. Particular attention will be placed on the hook, the importance of contextual knowledge, individual document analysis, and argument writing. Discussion will focus on how districts can use The DBQ Project Method and program to vertically align some of their Common Core efforts in both ELA and Social Studies. The intended audience is upper elementary through high school teachers and school leaders.

12 American Short Stories for American History Classes

The twelve short stories, masterpieces by authors like Hawthorne, Twain, Hurston, and Cisneros, were selected with critical thinking experiences in mind. The sets of social studies activities to use with them include role plays, debates, research projects, inquiry tasks, logic and writing tasks. There are also dozens of literary terms, skills, and discussion starters, all enclosed with each story.

No Citizen Left Behind: The Civic Mission of our nation’s schools!

Our nation’s system of education was founded to ensure all American’s know their rights and responsibilities as citizens. In recent years, Civics along with many other essential subjects have not received the time and attention they deserve. The Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools has developed a list of recommendations to strengthen and improve civic learning for all students, including six proven practices that make civic and service learning engaging to students. ‘Democracy needs to be re-born in each generation and education is it’s midwife’ said John Dewey, this session will focus on how to revitalize civic learning for all students.

Using the Critical Thinking Skills in the New Advanced Placement Standards to Improve Student Engagement in  All High School History/Social Studies Classes

Using examples of assignments focused on Critical Thinking Skills and Project Based Learning activities, the presentation will introduce ways in whcih teachers can resolve the "coverage vs. depth" debate by getting students more deeply engaged in their own learning, more motivated to want to know more, and more prepared to be able to demonstrate their learning in both internal class assignments and external assessments including state mandated tests or the College Board's AP Exam in U.S. History.
